HEATHER FORTIN RUBALD
I have always loved making something out of nothing – or what most people would consider nothing, so working with plastic bags grew rather organically. The fact that it takes so many of them to create even the most modest of pieces, required me to actually speak of my work and request that people give me some of their plastic bags. The mere fact that I knew it would be a relief rather than a hardship for these people to give me their plastic speaks to the Problem/Opportunity that this art form addresses. Talking to people made my friends enthusiastic about my work. They appreciated the pieces I would create, but were especially happy that I was taking something they felt guilty about collecting and was turning it into something beautiful and functional. Once my friends and acquaintances supported what I was doing, it somehow became my responsibility to keep doing it. So for several years now I have focused almost all of my creative energies on the plastic bag.
